Yes, this song is a year old. Yes this isn’t from Bat for Lashes latest album Two Suns released last month. “What’s a Girl to Do,” however, could be considered a massive precursor to the darkly atmospheric dance music Bat For Lashes (a.k.a. Brighton resident Natasha Khan) has embraced for her latest release, much to the pleasure of audiences and critics alike. Plus, the video for “What’s a Girl to Do” could not imagine a spookier set of images this side of Stephen King, complete with super overt references to every indie kid’s writ of passage movie, Donnie Darko, and some seriously fragile spoken word verses by Ms. Khan herself. The whole package provides the kind of warped, solipsistic reality only the best song writers have the ability to tap into. And honestly, this warped reality will be influencing my dreams for months to come.
